1 – Digital printing: Yes or no?
The short answer is yes.
But of course, it’s not always that simple, but we’ll make it pretty easy.
10 years ago, digital printing’s quality was behind other methods, such as screen printing. However, it’s now so good it’s a no-brainer to choose digital. There are no setup fees, the range of colors and the detail is incredible, and you can get almost any effect you want.
The only reason you wouldn’t choose digital is for 1 reason. If your print run is over 1 million labels (or stickers), choose another analog print method, such as gravure. It’ll be cheaper per label, even though the setup costs will be $10,000+
2 – How long are the lead times?
This will depend on if you chose digital printing for question 1.
I’ll assume you did because it’s relevant for 99+% of people reading this blog.
That means it’s probably shorter than you imagine. You can get custom stickers within a few days. If you allowed one week, that would be enough time to give you a range of suppliers to choose from.
3 – Are environmentally friendly options available?
Yes. And more than you may think.
There are plenty of papers available, and these have been on the market for many years.
However, newer materials look, feel, & behave like a plastic sticker but are actually made from wood pulp, meaning they’re total compostable.
These clear labels are a great example. Check out how transparent they are! You’d never guess they are made from wood.

4 – How durable are stickers?
More durable than you may think.
The key to getting a nice durable sticker is to get them laminated.
A laminate is a layer that goes over the printed image to protect it from scratching, sunlight, fading, rain, and other chemicals.
This image shows where it goes – it’s layer number one.
As you can see, the laminate sits right on top of the sticker protecting the rest of it.
I’ve had stickers on the back of my phone for well over a year, going in & out of my pocket, getting dropped, scratched and scuffed. It’s incredible how good they still look! A laminated sticker will last years, even outside.

5 – What material options are available?
As you can imagine, the list is almost endless. There are thousands of possibilities.
However, the 80:20 rule comes into play, as in most areas of life, and so finding the suitable material for your application is relatively straightforward.
The primary choice is; do you go for paper or plastic.
Choose paper if your sticker or label is for really short-term use, such as fast-food wrapping. Paper labels are also great for eco-friendly options, especially when stuck to cardboard or paper, as they can all be thrown in the recycling together.
On the other hand, choose a plastic sticker if you have a long-term application or need a premium feel. Plastic stickers are also available in some pretty awesome colors. The image below shows some possible options.
